Shih Tzu are not a separate breed but rather smaller sized Shih Tzus that are bred to be smaller than the breed standard. While the American Kennel Club (AKC) does not officially recognize the "teacup" designation, these smaller dogs are popular among those seeking a petite companion. Here are the typical characteristics for teacup Shih Tzus: Weight: Teacup Shih Tzus typically weigh between 3 to 7 pounds (1.36 to 3.17 kg), which is less than the standard Shih Tzu weight range of 9 to 16 pounds (4.08 to 7.26 kg). Height: They usually stand about 6 to 8 inches (15.24 to 20.32 cm) tall at the shoulder. Standard Shih Tzus stand about 9 to 10.5 inches (22.86 to 26.67 cm) tall. The Teacup Shih Tzu doesn’t care what you do as long as he’s doing it with you. Left with toys to play with, he can entertain himself and doesn’t mind if you work all day as long as you come home to him and give him some love. Teacup Shih Tzus tend to like dogs and children. They enjoy play dates and can make great therapy dogs. Some like cats and some don’t; it seems to be entirely an individual preference rather than a breed trait. He is playful and, on occasion, mischievous. He will steal your shoes. He may want you to chase him after he steals them. On the other hand, if he really wants them, he just might bury them.
